Soak In This: Seven Reasons to Take a Salt Bath Today

Reducing sodium intake is often one of the first things recommended to those trying to clean up their diets and become healthier, and while we’re all on board with healthy eating, we’re going to add one more point of advice: That you should switch from eating salts to bathing with them instead. We’re not suggesting that you take your table salt and dump them it the bathtub, oh no - we’re saying you should replace it entirely with a new step in your health care routine!

Bringing salt into the bathtime routine is a time-honored tradition, from fancy high-end salts from Hawaiian beaches or Himalayan mountains blended with essential oils, to merely easing your feet into an Epsom soak at the end of a long day. Depending on the type of salts used, different benefits may be gained from the bath - here at the Apothecary we use a blend of fine-grain Dendritic salt, Pacific Sea Salt, Epsom salt, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda - a salt as the word sodium would suggest!). Each specific type of salt contains trace minerals, each with their own benefits, and adding herbs and essential oils to the blend gives the bather greater options for what issues they want to soak away.

Technicalities aside, the question remains - why, exactly, should salt baths be a part of a healthy daily routine? Here’s a brief rundown of why we love bath salts:

  1. Bath salt blends featuring Epsom salt can boost magnesium levels in the body with a quick soak daily, promoting many different health benefits.
  2. Masseurs and natural health practitioners extol the detoxifying virtues of salt baths, gently drawing out toxins and heavy metals and infusing the body with beneficial minerals like calcium, sulfates, magnesium, potassium, and bromide
  3. Soaking in a salt bath before bed can ease insomnia and promote restful sleep - add lavender, like in our Sweet Sleep bath salt, for more insomnia-fighting power!
  4. As athletes everywhere will attest, salt baths with Epsom is a favorite remedy for aching joints and muscles.
  5. A salt bath, especially with warming herbs and oils added, helps to increase circulation and heats up cold feet and fingers
  6. Due to the trace mineral content, salt baths provide excellent conditioning for the skin. A small addition of organic oils, such as olive or sweet almond, will only add further softness!
  7. Relaxing in a warm bath at the end of a long day eases stress and promotes greater peace of mind, something we could all benefit from!

And finally, maybe a more personal reason….

     8) Who doesn’t love pretending to be a mermaid soaking in a salty lagoon???

While salt is a staple of the human diet - we can’t live without it, though there can be too much of a good thing - we at Apothecary 321 believe that bath salts should also be a staple of everyone’s daily care routine. As you can see, there are many reasons for it to be part of your health care, but we also believe making it a part of self care is just as important. Setting aside time for yourself to relax and have a soak is a simple and effective way to practice self care, especially in this day and age where time appears to be short and stress is high.

So there you have it - just a few of many reasons to love soaking in salt baths. Feel free to stop by the Apothecary to stock up on some salts, or simply to sound off on your favorite blends for bathing in. Happy soaking!
